Berwyn sits in the middle of the Chicago bungalow belt, and if you live here you probably know the tight basement stairs and the narrow side gangway by heart. Mixed in are apartment buildings along Ogden Avenue and Cermak Road with their own stairwells and parking quirks. Different buildings, different plans. This guide covers both.
01Getting furniture out of a bungalow
Brick bungalows look simple from the curb but often hide tricky routes inside: a front door that opens into a small vestibule, a dining room with built-ins, an attic bedroom reached by a steep stair. A king box spring that went up the attic stairs years ago does not always come back down the same way. Tell us about any finished attic or basement bedrooms before moving day.
Measure the tightest point, usually the stair turn, and compare it with your biggest piece. If a dresser has removable legs or a bed frame splits in half, our furniture assembly and disassembly help keeps hardware bagged and labeled.
02Side door, gangway or front steps
Many Berwyn houses give you three options: the front steps, a side door off the gangway, or a back door near the garage. The best route depends on the piece. A sofa might go out the front, while boxes move faster through the back toward an alley-parked truck. We will talk through it on the estimate call.
03Apartments along Ogden and Cermak
Ogden and Cermak are commercial corridors with steady traffic, so loading directly in front of a storefront building is not always possible. Look at the nearest side street and ask your property manager whether there is a rear entrance or a lot the truck can use briefly.
If you are moving out of a third-floor unit above a shop, plan the stair carry and the curb at the same time. Those two details decide the crew size more than the number of rooms.
04Garages and basements count too
People often forget the detached garage and the basement until the end of the day. Workbenches, shelving and bikes take time. Walk through both spaces before you request an estimate and include them in the list.
05When the new place is in the city
Your Berwyn move may go east into Chicago or north toward Oak Park. Each town has its own parking approach. If you are heading into the city, look into whether you need temporary no-parking signs from CDOT and how much lead time they ask for. If you are heading somewhere else, check that village’s guidance. We plan around whatever space ends up available, but planning early is up to the person living there.
06Appliances and the basement stair
If a washer, dryer or freezer is coming with you, have it disconnected and drained before moving day. Bungalow basement stairs are often steep with a low header at the bottom, so tell us which appliances are going and measure that opening first.
